Therapy
I provide therapy to adolescents, adults, and couples. My specialty areas include depression, bipolar disorder, self-harm, divorce, stress management, adolescent development and life transitions. I also enjoy working with LGBTQ individuals and couples.
I believe that therapy should be more than rehashing problems. I view you as a collaborator in setting concrete goals and working towards positive life changes and growth. I will be a supportive cheerleader, while pushing you to think about your life from a different perspective and to work towards a better version of yourself. I tend to be directive, when needed, helping you to avoid “spinning your wheels” and guiding you in a different direction.
I offer only high-quality treatment, supported by research. The process is focused on both accepting oneself, while also developing more effective ways to cope, as well as changing patterns that are not working for you. This tends to work best with individuals who wish to be active participants in treatment.
Mediation and Collaborative Divorce
Family problems typically involve strong emotions, and the process you choose can have a lasting impact on your relationships with family members. While going to court will ultimately resolve legal issues, it often causes irreparable damage to relationships. I am a highly trained collaborative divorce professional and mediator, available to assist in resolving family disputes outside of court. I began working in the collaborative divorce process and mediation after seeing the negative and long-lasting results of conflicts on families. My goal is to provide a safe respectful space and guidance for people to have difficult conversations and to reach compromises that allow them to move forward. Choosing one of these processes can be helpful in developing co-parenting relationships and preserving parent and sibling dynamics in Elder Care Mediation
I specialize in helping people to divorce in ways that help to minimize the emotional impact on themselves and their families. I also assist in ongoing parenting concerns, post decree or with unmarried parents, such as modifying parenting plans, changing schedules and making parenting decisions.
I provide Elder Mediation services to facilitate difficult conversations about housing, health, safety and financial concerns to allow families to make these critical decisions. In my eldercare mediation work I often partner with an attorney co-mediator to allow us to use our combined expertise to address both the emotional and legal nuances of these complicated situations.
My Approach to Therapy
My primary approach is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which tends to focus more on here and now situations, with an emphasis on both how our thought patterns affect our emotions and on developing new behavioral strategies. I also use Dialectical Behavior Therapy or DBT, which is designed to address self-harm, extreme emotional sensitivity, anger management, and impulsivity. The goals of DBT are greater acceptance of emotions while finding more effective methods of coping with them. I am also trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, which is a highly effective short-term research-based treatment for those who have experienced trauma.
