Dr. Wishnick's Approach to Therapy
I believe that therapy should be more than rehashing problems. I view you as a collaborator in setting concrete goals and working towards positive life changes and growth. I will be a supportive cheerleader, while pushing you to think about your life from a different perspective and to work towards a better version of yourself. I tend to be directive, when needed, helping you to avoid “spinning your wheels” and guiding you in a different direction.
I offer only high quality treatment, supported by research. The process is focused on both accepting oneself, while also developing more effective ways to cope, as well as changing patterns that are not working for you. This tends to work best with individuals who want to be active participants in treatment.
My primary approach is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which tends to focus more on here and now situations, with an emphasis on both how our thought patterns affect our emotions and on developing new behavioral strategies. I also use Dialectical Behavior Therapy or DBT which is designed to address self-harm, extreme emotional sensitivity, anger management, and impulsivity. The goals of DBT are greater acceptance of emotions while finding more effective methods of coping with them. I am also trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, which is a highly effective short-term research based treatment for those who have experienced trauma.
